I have this conversation with about 75% of my clients. It goes something like this:
"I tried to analyze myself. I used the TikTok filters, I did the vein test, the paper test, etc etc. And I couldn't figure it out, so I decided I needed to go to a professional color analyst."
Guess what? I did those things too before I was professionally analyzed and did my color analysis training. And guess what else? I couldn't figure out my season on my own. Not saying that it's impossible, but it truly helps to have an objective professional figure it out for you.
(Above) Here's a pic of me from 2019 trying to use the book "ReInvent Yourself with Color Me Beautiful" by Joanne Richmond to figure out my best colors. There is so much wrong with this pic, I almost hesitate to go into it. But, of course I will; as well as give you my thoughts on the infamous 'vein test' and give you some reasons why you might want to see a professional color analyst.
First, some issues with the pics of me above:
Lighting- I am in my kitchen with extremely warm lighting. NO! In-direct sunlight (like near a window) would have been much better
Too many small colors- It would have been better to find a few garments in my house of some of the colors from the book and done a mini-draping on myself by holding up the garment under my chin to see how it changed my face.
Makeup- I am definitely wearing some makeup in these pics. No makeup is preferable when color analyzing.
And similarly, here are a few reasons I take issue with the "vein test"
Veins Aren’t an Exact Indicator of Skin Tone People with similar skin tones can have very different vein colors, and vice versa. It’s more of an illusion than an accurate reading of your true undertone.
Skin Complexities Are Overlooked The vein test doesn’t take into account the complexities of your skin. You could have a combination of cool and warm undertones, or you may have neutral undertones. Relying on one visible factor like veins ignores all of these subtleties, and thus, you could be missing out on your best colors.
Vein Color Is Affected by Many Factors Your vein color can be influenced by the thickness of your skin, your overall health, and even your age. Some people have veins that simply appear more blue or green regardless of their skin undertone because of these factors, making this test too subjective.
And if you've made it this far, here are some reasons why you may want to be professionally color analyzed instead:
Comprehensive Analysis A professional color analyst looks at far more than your veins—they consider your hair color, eye color, skin tone, and how different shades and hues interact with each other on you. The process is detailed and thorough, considering all elements of your personal coloring.
Tailored Approach Professional color analysts understand that people can have a blend of warm and cool tones. With a personal color analysis, you get recommendations tailored to your unique features.
Access to a Full Color Palette When you see a professional, you’re not limited to just cool or warm shades. You’ll discover a full range of colors within your personal color season, from soft pastels to rich jewel tones, based on factors like your contrast level and the vibrancy of your natural coloring.
Enhances Your Style and Confidence Once you know your best colors, putting together outfits becomes easier and more enjoyable. You’ll have a better sense of what looks best on you, helping you feel more confident in your appearance. Also, with a style analysis, you can also help you connect your personality with your wardrobe choices, ensuring you feel authentic in your style.
Avoids Costly Mistakes How many times have you bought a piece of clothing in a color you thought would look great, only to feel disappointed when it didn’t? A professional color analysis helps you avoid these costly mistakes. You’ll invest in pieces that truly flatter you, saving you both money and frustration in the long run.
To get an accurate, comprehensive, and personalized analysis, working with a professional color analyst is the way to go. They’ll consider every element of your unique coloring and give you the tools to enhance your wardrobe and your confidence.
